Stone paper, also sold as rock paper or under brand names such as TerraSkin, is made mostly from calcium carbonate (ground mineral) held together with a resin binder. It contains no wood fiber, so it is considered tree free.
It has some useful properties. It is water resistant and tear resistant, which makes it a good fit for labels and other pieces that get wet or handled often.
It also has limits. Because of the resin, stone paper does not belong in paper recycling. It can only be recycled in some plastic recycling streams, and those are not available everywhere. For most printed pieces, a 100% post-consumer recycled paper is easier to recycle at the end of its life.
