Kraft Paper
Natural brown sheet; varies by mill
Recycled kraft available

What it is and what it suits
Kraft paper is the strong, natural brown sheet used for envelopes, mailers, tags and packaging. It is made with the kraft pulping process, which keeps the fibers long and strong, and it is brown because it is left unbleached or only lightly bleached. Recycled kraft is widely available and is the version we recommend.

How ink prints on kraft
Printing ink is translucent, so the brown of the sheet shows through. Colors print darker and more muted than they do on white paper, and light colors can almost disappear. Black, dark greens, dark blues and other deep colors print best. One or two colors usually look better on kraft than full color. If your design needs white or light colors, mention it when you request a quote, because it needs a different setup.
Kraft paper and the environment
Kraft paper skips most or all of the bleaching that white paper goes through, and recycled kraft keeps used fiber in circulation. Uncoated kraft is accepted in most curbside paper recycling programs. Keep it recyclable by avoiding plastic windows and film laminates. Our guide to eco friendly packaging for small business covers kraft mailers, labels and inserts.
Is kraft paper recyclable?

Can you print in color on kraft paper?
