Door hanger size: standard door hanger dimensions and specs
Most door hangers are 3.5 x 8.5 or 4.25 x 11 inches. This guide covers standard door hanger sizes, the die-cut hole, file setup, paper choices and the rules for handing them out.

The most common door hanger size is 3.5 x 8.5 inches. A larger 4.25 x 11 inch door hanger gives more room for offers, photos and a tear-off card. Door hangers reach every home on a street without postage, which makes them a practical choice for realtors, contractors, landscapers, cleaning services, restaurants that deliver and community groups.
Standard door hanger sizes
- 3.5 x 8.5 in: the most common size, with room for a headline, an offer and contact details.
- 4.25 x 11 in: more room on both sides for photos, services and a coupon.
- 4.25 x 14 in: a tall door hanger for menus and detailed offers.
- Custom die-cut shapes: for a shaped top or outline.
The hanger hole
Each door hanger is die cut with a round hole and a slit to the edge, so it slips over a doorknob or lever handle and stays in place. The hole and slit take up roughly the top few inches of the card, so plan the design to start below them. Ask for a template with the die line before you design. Our guide to die cutting explains how the shape is cut.
File setup
- Build the file at the finished size, such as 3.5 x 8.5 in.
- Add 0.125 in of bleed on every side.
- Place the die line from the template on its own layer so it does not print.
- Keep text at least 0.125 in inside the trim and clear of the hole and slit.
- If you add a perforated tear-off card, keep text clear of the perforation line.

Paper and finishes
Door hangers need to hold up outdoors for the time they are on the door, so they are printed on heavy cover stock, such as 14pt to 16pt or 100 lb to 130 lb cover. Uncoated stock is easy to write on if your team adds a note by hand. Recycled kraft gives a natural look for landscapers and garden businesses.
How to design a door hanger
- Keep the front simple: a clear headline, one offer and a phone number or website.
- Use the back for details, a short list of services or a map.
- Add a perforated coupon or appointment card the resident can keep.
- Use a QR code that goes to a specific landing page, so you can see how many people responded.
Rules for handing out door hangers
Do not put door hangers in or on mailboxes. Federal law reserves mailboxes for postage-paid mail, so a door hanger belongs on the door handle. Some neighborhoods and homeowner associations limit door-to-door distribution, so check local rules first. Hanging each card firmly on the handle keeps it from blowing into the street.
