Gift tag size: standard gift tag dimensions and print specs
Most printed gift tags are 2 x 3.5 inches, the size of a business card. This guide covers standard gift tag sizes, folded tags, hole placement, paper and design tips.

The most common printed gift tag size is 2 x 3.5 inches, the same size as a business card. Shops use gift tags on wrapped purchases, companies add them to corporate gifts and holiday orders, and couples use them on wedding favors. A small tag with a logo and room to write a name finishes a package without much cost.
Standard gift tag sizes
- 2 x 3.5 in: the most common size, with room for a logo and a written name.
- 2 x 3 in: a slightly smaller rectangle for small gifts and favors.
- 2.5 in round: a circle tag that suits jars, bottles and baked goods.
- Custom die-cut shapes: a star, a leaf, a tree or your logo outline. Our guide to die cutting explains how shapes are cut.
Flat and folded tags
A flat tag is a single card with the design on the front and room to write on the back. A folded tag is scored so it opens like a small card, with the design on the cover and room for a longer note inside. A folded 2 x 3.5 in tag is printed flat at 4 x 3.5 in or 2 x 7 in, depending on where the fold is.
Hole and string
- A small punched hole near the top, centered or in one corner, is standard.
- Keep text and logos clear of the hole, at least 0.375 in from the top edge.
- Cotton twine, jute and paper ribbon keep the tag easy to recycle. Plastic ribbon does not.
Paper and finishes
Gift tags are printed on heavy cover stock so they hold their shape on the package. Uncoated recycled cover and kraft are easy to write on with any pen. Cotton card stock gives a soft, premium feel and takes letterpress well. Foil stamping adds a holiday finish. Our cardstock guide explains the weights.
File setup
- Build the file at the finished size, such as 2 x 3.5 in.
- Add 0.125 in of bleed on every side if color runs to the edge.
- Keep text at least 0.125 in inside the trim and clear of the hole.
- For die-cut shapes, put the cut line on its own layer as a spot color.
Our guide to bleed in printing covers trim and safe area.
Design tips
- Leave a clear area marked "To" and "From", or a blank space, for a handwritten name.
- Keep the logo small and simple so it reads at tag size.
- Match the tag to your wrapping paper and stickers so the package looks planned.
- For products on a shelf, use hang tags instead. See custom hang tags.

What paper is best for gift tags?
A heavy uncoated cover stock or kraft, so any pen writes cleanly. Cotton card stock gives a premium feel.
Are gift tags recyclable?
Paper gift tags without plastic lamination can be recycled. Remove any plastic ribbon first.
